Houston Company Honored as 2010 IBM Beacon Award for Storage Project for Texas Children’s Hospital

Houston, Texas (Marketwire) May 18, 2010 - Mark 3 Systems, Inc., one of the leading Texas information technology resources, was selected as a 2010 IBM Beacon Award winner. The Beacon Awards recognize the best solutions and services that IBM Business Partners have delivered to businesses around the world.

From their Houston headquarters, Mark 3 Systems has been an IBM Premier Business Partner since 1995, specializing in solutions centered on datacenter optimization, high availability, and data management.  In 2009, Mark 3 Systems designed a new storage strategy for Texas Children’s Hospital, a major project that decreased operational costs for the recognized pediatric hospital located in the Texas Medical Center by 25%. Texas Children’s Hospital selected Mark 3 Systems when they were seeking a solution for aging storage equipment in three of their data centers. Their goal was to find a more efficient way to manage their storage needs, and IBM equipment was an important equation in their selection of Mark 3 Systems.

The solution consists of several IBM storage products, including XIV, SAN Volume Controller (SVC), NSeries Gateway, and DS4700. The project also included data migration utilizing both the SVC and XIV migration capabilities; DS8000 assessment, end-to-end mapping and documentation, and in-depth training on the XIV systems and SAN Volume Controller Clusters. Tivoli Storage Productivity Center is used to monitor and manage all disc, data and fabric storage performance and metrics. The end result was that the hospital was able to manage everything from a single control center with just two employees. That resulted in a major cost savings to Texas Children’s Hospital and more efficiency in their storage.

To be a finalist for the prestigious IBM Awards was an exceptional achievement for the Houston-based company; winning in such a competitive category was thrilling to the entire team at Mark 3 Systems.
